What is a needlepoint canvas?

A needlepoint canvas is a stiff, open-weave mesh fabric designed specifically for needlepoint stitching. The mesh provides a grid structure that holds stitches evenly, and designs can either be hand-painted directly onto the canvas or followed from a separate chart. Canvas comes in different mesh counts—the number of threads per inch—with 13-mesh and 18-mesh being the most common.

What is the difference between a hand-painted needlepoint canvas and a printed canvas?

A hand-painted canvas has the design applied by hand directly onto the mesh, resulting in precise, vibrant color placement that is easy to follow while stitching. Printed canvases use a machine-printing process that can sometimes bleed between mesh holes or lack the color crispness of hand-painted work.

How do I choose the right needlepoint canvas for a beginner?

Start with a smaller project on a lower mesh count. A 13-mesh canvas is a great beginner choice because the holes are larger and easier to see. Ornaments, coasters, and small decorative pieces are ideal first projects. Choose a hand-painted canvas so you can see exactly where each color goes without needing to count threads. Look for designs with larger color blocks rather than intricate, fine details.

What supplies do I need to start needlepoint?

You need a needlepoint canvas, fibers such as wool, silk, or cotton thread matched to your canvas, a blunt tapestry needle in the correct size for your mesh count, and a pair of small embroidery scissors.

How long does it take to complete a needlepoint canvas?

The time required depends on the canvas size and mesh count. A small ornament on 18-mesh might take 10 to 20 hours of stitching. A medium-sized project, such as an eyeglass case or small pillow, might take 30 to 60 hours. Larger projects, including full-size pillows or Christmas stockings, can take 80 to more than 200 hours. Many stitchers treat needlepoint as a meditative, ongoing hobby and enjoy the process over several weeks or months.

Can I get a needlepoint canvas custom designed?

Atlantic Blue Canvas is a boutique painting house that provides professional needlepoint canvas painting for designers, shops, and brands. While we do not currently offer this service for individual canvases, you can contact us for recommendations.

What is needlepoint canvas finishing?

Finishing is the process of turning your completed stitched canvas into a final product, such as a pillow, ornament, belt, eyeglass case, or framed piece. Professional finishing involves blocking the canvas to straighten any mesh distorted during stitching, constructing the final object, and adding backing, trim, or hardware. Many stitchers send their completed canvases to a professional finisher for the best results.
